Aberlour 16 Years Old

If The Glenlivet 18 is a quiet conversation, Aberlour 16 is a fireside welcome — sherried, warming, and generous from the first pour.

The Story

Aberlour sits at the heart of Speyside, founded in 1879 by James Fleming, a banker's son whose motto — "let the deed show" — still appears on every bottle. The house style is defined by sherry: Aberlour is one of the distilleries that never abandoned the tradition of maturing in Oloroso butts alongside traditional oak. The 16 Year Old's double cask maturation is that philosophy in balance — sherry richness on one side, oak structure on the other, sixteen years to reach harmony.

Tasting Notes

Appearance: A deep amber with flashes of ruby, like autumn leaves caught in fading sunlight.

Nose: Inviting layers of dried fruits, raisins, and prunes wrapped in sherry richness. Sweet honey, caramel, and soft vanilla unfold, balanced with cinnamon, nutmeg, and a touch of oak polish.

Palate: Full-bodied and velvety. Blackcurrants and ripe plums meet dark chocolate, toffee, and a drizzle of honey. The sherry influence shines with warmth, while gentle spice and oak give balance and depth.

Finish: Long, warm, and slightly drying. Notes of sweet spice, oak, and lingering dark fruit fade slowly like the last embers of a fire.

Verdict

The autumn-and-winter dram. If you love sherried whisky — or want to discover why people do — Aberlour 16 is one of the most harmonious expressions of the style you can buy.

Perfect serve: Neat, after dinner. This is a dessert in itself. Pair with: Dark chocolate, Christmas cake, dried figs.
